What to Expect at Your First Pilates Class
By Nasreen Alexandra Davison, APPI-qualified Pilates Instructor · 1 September 2026

Quick answer
Your first Pilates class will typically start with a short health questionnaire and a chat with your instructor about any injuries or concerns, followed by a class adapted to beginners, focused on correct movement, breathing, and control rather than intensity. Wear fitted, stretchy clothing and socks, and arrive 10–15 minutes early.
If you've been putting off trying Pilates in Grantham because you're not sure what to expect, here's a complete walkthrough.
Before you book: Mat or Reformer?
Both formats are beginner-friendly. Mat Pilates uses only body weight on a floor mat, while Reformer Pilates uses a spring-resistance machine that can support and guide movement. If you're unsure which to start with, see our full comparison in Reformer vs Mat Pilates: What's the Difference?, or simply ask when you book. We're happy to recommend a starting point.
What to wear
- Fitted, stretchy clothing: leggings or fitted joggers and a fitted top. Loose clothing can catch on equipment, particularly on the Reformer.
- Socks: required at most studios for hygiene; grip socks are recommended for Reformer Pilates as they help with stability on the carriage and footbar.
- No jewellery that could catch or dangle: best left at home or securely tucked away.
What to bring
- A water bottle
- A small towel, if you prefer one
- Any relevant medical information (recent injuries, surgeries, or conditions) to mention to your instructor. You don't need to bring paperwork, just be ready to talk through it
Arriving at the studio
Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early for your first visit. This gives time to:
- Complete a brief health questionnaire (standard practice, not a barrier; it just helps your instructor adapt the class to you).
- Meet your instructor and mention any injuries, conditions, or concerns.
- Get oriented in the space before the class starts, especially useful for a first Reformer session.
Our studio is at 71 Castlegate, Grantham, NG31 6SQ. See directions and contact details here.
What happens during the class
A beginner-friendly Pilates class generally follows this shape:
- Warm-up: gentle movement to prepare the body and introduce breathing technique.
- Core exercises: a series of controlled movements building core strength, alignment, and body awareness, adapted to your ability.
- Instructor guidance throughout: cues on form and breathing, and hands-on or verbal adjustments as needed.
- Cool-down: gentle stretching to finish.
In a small group setting (our Reformer classes are limited to five people), you get real attention rather than being lost in a crowd, which matters most in your first few sessions. If you've been inactive for a while or have a medical condition, the NHS's physical activity guidelines recommend a quick check with your GP first, and it's worth mentioning this to your instructor too so your first class can be paced accordingly.
Will it be hard?
A well-run first class should feel challenging but manageable. Pilates works muscles, particularly deep core muscles, that many people don't normally engage, so it's common to notice new sensations or mild muscle soreness afterward. It shouldn't feel overwhelming or painful; if something doesn't feel right, say so during the class so your instructor can adjust.
After your first class
Mild muscle soreness a day or two later (sometimes called DOMS) is normal and usually fades as your body adapts. Staying hydrated and moving gently helps. If you experience sharp pain rather than general muscle fatigue, mention it to your instructor before your next session.
Many beginners find that a short series of classes, rather than a single session, is what really shows the benefit, as technique and confidence build over the first few weeks.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to my first Pilates class?
Fitted, stretchy clothing that allows a full range of movement, such as leggings and a fitted top. Avoid loose or baggy clothes that could get caught in equipment. Socks are usually required, and grip socks are recommended for Reformer Pilates.
Do I need to be fit or flexible to start Pilates?
No. Pilates is designed to meet you at your current level. Complete beginners are welcome, and a qualified instructor will adapt exercises to your ability rather than expecting a set fitness level from day one.
Will my first Pilates class be hard?
A well-taught first class should feel challenging but manageable, focused on learning correct movement and breathing rather than intensity. You may feel muscles working that you don't normally notice, but it shouldn't feel overwhelming.
How early should I arrive for my first class?
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to complete a brief health questionnaire and speak with your instructor about any injuries or concerns before the class begins.
